Around ten years ago, the Tesla Supercharger network expanded rapidly. Elon Musk promised many buyers free charging forever — powered by solar energy and batteries. At the same time, the referral program was booming. Thousands of fans passionately promoted Tesla online and offline, using their personal referral links. A genuine community formed that voluntarily helped accelerate the transition to electric mobility.
The rewards were tempting
The prizes were tangible and attractive at first: mini Teslas for kids, wheels for the Model S and Model X, shop accessories and more. With every successful referral, you climbed higher. The top reward was particularly spectacular: those who collected enough referrals could secure one or even two Founders Series Roadsters. In some phases, around 55 successful referrals were enough for a free Roadster; more than 100 could get you two. Well-known YouTubers and dedicated fans achieved exactly that — and already saw the cars listed as “Referral Award” in their Tesla accounts.
Then came the disillusionment
Today, almost a decade later, the Roadster is still nowhere to be seen. Delivery dates were postponed year after year, and serial production deliveries have yet to begin. At the same time, Tesla radically changed the referral program multiple times: rewards were reduced, the program was temporarily shut down completely, and later revived in a heavily stripped-down form. Many long-time referrers can no longer find their earlier credits in their accounts — or they have quietly disappeared. In a way, it feels as if we were strung along with big promises and ended up somewhat screwed over. The early enthusiasm was used, while the rewards were gradually hollowed out.
What remains?
Despite the disappointment, our fascination with Tesla remains unbroken. The vehicles and the technology still convince. Yet the referral program shows how quickly a win-win community can turn into a one-sided story.
